This Steinway & Sons Model B has been rebuilt with the patience reserved for instruments destined for serious rooms. The plate, belly, and action have been brought into concert alignment, so that the familiar six-foot-eleven scale speaks with warmth in the tenor and a silken, unforced brilliance in the treble.

A Bösendorfer of this pedigree is less an object than a lineage. Restored in the Riverton atelier, this 214 retains the characteristic Viennese bloom — a singing middle register and a bass that seems to arrive from a greater depth than the case should allow.
